This afternoon was the first Council meeting of the 2012/13 municipal year.
The newly elected Councillors were welcomed to their first meeting and the Leader of the Council entered into a “State of the Borough” debate with opposition Councillors. It was a rather stormy meeting – with much debate between the new Conservative Group leader, Cllr Iain Gartside of Tottington, and the Labour Leader of the Council, Cllr Mike Connolly over the Council’s budget cuts and Plan for Change proposals.
The final part of the meeting was to elect a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Joan Grimshaw of Unsworth was elected and sworn in as Mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury.
Cllr Alan Matthews of Whitefield was elected and sworn in as Deputy Mayor.
The Council’s normal business can now get under way. I will keep you posted …
